Since I started building my agency a few months ago, I have read a lot of submissions. Each time I open an envelope with sample pages I get excited. Who knows?
The next thing I read may be my favorite manuscript of all time.

I'd Love to See More Nonfiction Proposals
Like most agents I eagerly solicit nonfiction proposals. Why? Well, for me it's because I'm a huge reader of nonfiction books.
I personally have a library of hundreds of books on many, many subjects. Plus, the number of nonfiction books published far exceeds the number of fiction books published each year. Conventional wisdom says that nonfiction books are easier to sell since more of them are published each year.
Another reason is that nonfiction books are sold on the basis of a proposal. If a writer is an expert in her field and has a platform--that is, a built-in audience to sell the book to--my job just got a whole lot easier.
I hesitate to list the areas I'm interested in because 1) I really am interested in a wide variety of subjects and 2) the subject you have in mind might not have occurred to me.
I would rather hear from you and learn what you have in mind before I say one way or the other.
Here's a pointer that I can offer. When coming up with your topic, do some research and make sure other books on the subject have been published. That's a pretty good indication that someone thought there was an audience for the book. Then be prepared to tell me why your book is different. And why you're the right person to write it.
Writing a book proposal isn't a slam dunk. It requires putting thoughts down on paper and organizing them. It also requires that you put some thought into how you are going to help promote the sale of the book once it is published.
The more complete the proposal, the easier it will be for me--or any editor--to say yes to your idea.
