From Krista Goering
Imagine just how many submissions an agent receives in a week. Now imagine that only six out of ten of them are properly formatted.

Like most agents I eagerly solicit nonfiction proposals. Why? Well, for me it's because I'm a huge reader of nonfiction books.

Why the feedback?
Since I started building my agency a few months ago, I have read a lot of submissions. Each time I open an envelope with sample pages I get excited. Who knows?
The next thing I read may be my favorite manuscript of all time.
I love getting to know an author through their words on a page. After reading sample pages, I check in with myself to see how the words affected me. Was the story riveting? Were the characters unforgettable? Did I feel as though the author had transported me to another time and place?
I immediately go to the computer and write a short response to the author. If I'm excited about the sample, I simply ask to read the rest of the manuscript.
If I'm not prepared to read the entire manuscript at this point, I like to give the author some feedback and explain why. Sometimes it takes a while to formulate my response - especially if it's hard to put my finger on why I didn't think something worked for me.
My purpose for giving feedback is to give the author a little insight into how their work has affected me, a stranger who has never read their work before. Most authors have let me know that they appreciate the feedback and that's why I continue.
My goal is to develop a stable of committed writers who will continually amaze me--and the reading public--with their creativity. I hope to facilitate the process of making their dream of becoming a published author come true.Sometimes that process entails giving feedback that could help the author see their work in a whole new light.
